On 18 June 1993 Marshall was sworn into the Queensland Police Service where he served in Brisbane and South-West Queensland until pursuing a career as a Detective. In 2002, Marshall commenced duty at State Crime Command and worked in specialist units including the State Drug Squad, the Armed Robbery Squad and the Covert Operations Unit. Marshall also worked at the Crime and Corruption Commission and performed joint investigations with State and Commonwealth law enforcement agencies.

Marshall took his skills to Prosecutions where he was admitted as a lawyer to the Supreme Court of Queensland and then to the High Court. In 2020, Marshall resigned from the Police to work in criminal defence where he appeared in the Magistrates, District and Supreme Courts. Marshall also has valuable experience of investigative hearings at the Crime and Corruption Commission and the Australian Crime and Intelligence Commission.

Marshall later returned to Prosecutions where he was the most senior civilian prosecutor on staff and was allocated the most difficult of matters. Following the Commission of Inquiry into Forensic DNA Testing, Marshall was handpicked to become part of the DNA Retrospective Review Unit where he assessed over 700 cases to ensure the efficacy of the investigation and the conviction.
